The Best of the Yucatan and Riviera Maya

Discover the legacies of the Mayan and Spanish empires on this 10-day tour of the Yucatan Peninsula, ending amid the glorious beaches of the Riviera Maya. Enjoy a half-day tour of the colonial city of Mérida from the jungle-clad resort, Chablé Yucatan. Explore the magnificent ruins of both Chichén Itza, the ceremonial centre of the Yucatan, inhabited for about 800 years, and Tulum, the only ancient Mayan city to be built on the coast. Then end your stay at Maroma, Belmond’s jewel on the Riviera Maya, perfectly positioned between thick, lush jungle and a peaceful stretch of sparkling white sand.

Day 1

Arrival in to Merida

Arrive at Merida airport and take a private transfer to the Chable Yucutan Resort & Spa for a 3 night stay. In a unique setting in the heart of the Mayan Forest, the resort is spread across 750 acres on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, just 30 minutes away from the airport and 40 minutes from Mérida. The first evening is at leisure to enjoy the resorts many facilities including a spa, pool and 2 restaurants.
Day 2

Merida

A private, expert guide will meet you at your hotel after breakfast for this tour of the historical centre of the city of Mérida.
The city was founded in 1542 by the son of Conquistador Francisco Montejo, who was from Mérida in Spain, and gave this capital city of Yucatán state its name.
Starting in the main square of the city (Zócalo), explore the oldest Cathedral in the Americas, the Government House with paintings by Fernando Castro and the Municipal Palace.
You will then return to the car and head down Paseo de Montejo, the main thoroughfare into the city, modeled on the Champs-Elysees and lined with trees and large colonial houses, once the city homes of rich Hacienda owners. You will stop to take in the large Monument, ‘Monumento de la Patria’, that tells the story of Mexico, with emblems of all the Mexican states.
Day 3

At Leisure

Chose to spend a day relaxing at the hotel or explore more of Yucatan with options to spend the day at Homun’s Cenote or for the adventurous, kayak amongst mangroves in search of a hidden beach.
Day 4

Chichen Itza and onto Tulum

Meet in the lobby after an early breakfast to visit one of the many highlights of Mexico and a bucketlist item for many people; Chichen Itza.

One of the first structures you will see is the “Castillo” or Pyramid of Kukulkan, classed as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World due to its ingenious architecture that results in a figure of a snake descending and ascending the steps during the equinox. Your guide will help you to see just how the shadowy serpent appears.
Exploring the site, you will learn how duality played a huge role in Mayan cosmology. Visiting the platform of the skulls, which was a monument to both life and death, you will see how each is represented, before heading to the ball court where archeologists are still undecided as to whether the winner or the loser was sacrificed. Observing the carvings there, you can make your own guess. Clap in the ball court and the sound will echo eight times, a testament to Maya architectural prowess.
Just outside of the walls of the city you will find the cenote where sacrificial drownings took place. Here you will learn about the type of rituals involved and what was uncovered when attempts were made to drain this deep sinkhole. At the conclusion of your visit, you will be driven on to hotel Casa Malca in Tulum for a 2 night stay.
Day 5

Explore Tulum Archaeological Site

After a private pick up, explore the ancient city of Tulum with your guide, the only ancient Mayan city with vistas over the Caribbean Sea and an important trading port in its day.

As you traverse the archeological zone, learn about Mayan history and cosmology from your expert, observing temples that were built hundreds of years ago to honor the gods of wind and rain. Admire the iconic “Castillo” structure from below, perched on a bluff facing the sunrise and miles of ocean.

After connecting with Mayan history and culture, you’ll be driven back to your hotel.
Day 6

Tulum to Riviera Maya

After breakfast, check out from Casa Malca and join your private transfer for an approximate 90 minute drive to Maroma, a Belmond Hotel. Located on stunning Maroma beach on Mexico’s famed Riviera Maya, the resort will be your base for the next 4 nights.
Days 7-9

Riviera Maya

These days are yours to enjoy at your leisure. Relax in your lovely surroundings and take advantage of the many amenities available at the hotel or explore more of the surrounding area with locations such as Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve or maybe snorkeling in a Mayan Cenote.
Day 10

Transfer to Cancun

The final day will include a private transfer from Maroma, a Belmond Hotel to Cancun International airport for your flight home.
