Day 1

Arrive Philadelphia (D)

Arrive at Philadelphia International Airport and transfer to the Sofitel Philadelphia for a 2 night stay. In the evening enjoy a welcome cocktail reception and dinner at the hotel, which is situated in the city centre near to the Rodin Museum, City Hall, Liberty Place and other landmarks.
Day 2

Philadelphia (B)

Immerse in American history with a tour of Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed. View the Liberty Bell before taking a horse-drawn carriage ride through the historic district. Visit the National Constitution Center and witness the award-winning presentation ‘Freedom Rising’. Spend the rest of the day at leisure.
Day 3

Amish Country & Gettysburg (B , L , D)

Today you will travel to Lancaster County for a guided tour of Amish culture, followed by lunch. Continue on to Gettysburg National Military Park for a visit to the interpretive centre, home to the film ‘A New Birth of Freedom’, narrated by Morgan Freeman, plus the massive Cyclorama painting that vividly brings battles to life. Arrive at The Gettysburg Hotel for an overnight stay, including an after-dinner dessert reception with a storyteller.
Day 4

Gettysburg’s battlefields, Skyline Drive (B, L, D)

A morning drive with a Gettysburg expert takes you through some of the battlefields – now eerily peaceful – viewing pivotal sites and hearing stories such as the defence of Little Round Top, the “Killer Angels” and the courage and futility of Pickett’s Charge. More than 50,000 men on both sides were killed, wounded or missing at Gettysburg; about 6,000 lie in the national cemetery here, which Lincoln dedicated with his famous address later that year. Following lunch, take a drive through historic Front Royal, Virginia (scene of an 1862 Civil War battle) en route to Shenandoah National Park, where you’ll travel a portion of the park’s scenic Skyline Drive – one of the world’s premier drives. The Civil War was fought in 10,000 places, the majority of them in the South; foraging armies swept across American farms and burned American towns, and homes became headquarters and hospitals. You’ll travel through some of these towns as you continue on this afternoon to Charlottesville, Virginia for a two-night stay at the Omni.
Day 5

Jefferson’s Monticello & Charlottesville (B, L)

Begin your day in Charlottesville with a visit to author, statesman, scientist and third US President Thomas Jefferson’s beloved Monticello, the hilltop house he designed on the principles of Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio. As you explore the house, plantation and grounds, you’ll observe that the realities of plantation life did not always fit comfortably with the founding father’s principles of equality and liberty. After lunch featuring colonial fare and servers in 18th-century period attire at the historic Michie Tavern, see the University of Virginia’s landmark Rotunda and Grounds, described by its designer Thomas Jefferson as an “academical village.” Also included today is a Tauck Exclusive: a private presentation on “African American Foodways from West Africa to Jefferson’s Kitchen” by Dr. Leni Sorensen, scholar, living history interpreter, and African American Research Historian for the Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello. The evening is free to spend as you please in Charlottesville.
Day 6

Richmond & onto Williamsburg (B, L, D)

An in-depth view of the Civil War from various perspectives awaits in Richmond, capital of Virginia and the capital of the Confederate States of America during the war. Begin the day with a private guided tour of the historic Virginia State Capitol, designed by Thomas Jefferson and French architect Charles-Louis Clérisseau, and modeled after an ancient Roman temple in southern France. A National Historic Landmark completed in 1788, the building also served as the Confederacy’s wartime capitol; a major restoration and expansion was completed in 2007. Following lunch at a local bistro, travel to Colonial Williamsburg, whose cobblestone streets and buildings have been restored to the way they looked when the city was Virginia’s Colonial capital. As you step back in time during your two-night stay at the Williamsburg Lodge, enjoy dinner this evening at an 18th-century style tavern in Colonial Williamsburg.
Day 7

Colonial Williamsburg (B)

Spend the day exploring Colonial Williamsburg, visiting authentically restored buildings, partaking in activities and watching live demonstrations.
Day 8

Mt. Vernon to Washington, D.C. (B , L , D)

Depart Williamsburg and travel to the magnificent Mount Vernon estate of America’s first president, George Washington. Explore the museum, 18th century mansion and landscaped grounds. Arrive at The Willard Washington, D.C. for a 3 night stay.
Day 9

Washington, D.C. (B)

Take a morning sightseeing tour of Washington’s iconic sights such as the White House, Capitol Hill, the National Mall and the Jefferson Memorial plus a visit to the Lincoln Memorial and Newseum.
Day 10

Inside the National Archives ( B , D )

Enjoy early admission to the Rotunda of the National Archives for a private viewing of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, with welcome comments by a National Archives insider. Then go behind the scenes with an archival researcher. In the evening you will be treated to a farewell reception and dinner.

Depart Washington, D.C. (B)

Transfer to the airport for your return flight.
