Maamunagau Private Island managed by InterContinental
This exclusive private-island resort is located in the Raa Atoll, a 35-minute seaplane transfer from Malé. It’s also next to the Baa Atoll, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, meaning the house reef at InterContinental attracts much of the same amazing marine life, including whale sharks, dolphins and groups of enormous manta rays.
Fringing the island are 75 breathtaking villas divided into three categories. Beach Villas are set amid tropical greenery and offer direct beach access, private pools and outdoor decks for dining alfresco. Two-storey Lagoon Villas deliver mesmerising views from their bathtubs and private infinity pools, while Overwater Villas provide direct access to the turquoise waters directly below them. For larger groups there are also six two- and three-bedroom residences that come with their own dedicated Island Curator, including a stunning three-bedroom Overwater Residence with unimpeded views of the Indian Ocean.
This is the first InterContinental to offer all guests access to Club InterContinental benefits, meaning breakfast and a variety of all-day snacks, soft drinks and aperitifs are included in the rates. Dining options are many and varied, from exquisite Mediterranean fare at signature restaurant Lighthouse to the adults-only Retreat and family-friendly Collective, complete with pizzeria, deli and gelato bar.
Facilities include two pools, the peaceful AVI Spa complete with overwater treatments rooms, a captivating kids’ club, and a watersports centre staffed by marine biologists that offers everything from snorkelling and diving to kayaking, paddleboarding and jet skiing.
