L’Albereta
This enchanting, ivy-clad Relais & Châteaux hotel looks out across the rolling hills and vineyards of Franciacorta, a sparkling-wine-producing region in the Italian lakes, just south of Lake Iseo and less than an hour’s drive from fashionable Milan.
Built in the 19th century as a private residence, the hotel retains a number of original features, including antique master paintings and frescoes. Rooms all vary in size, shape and décor, often featuring period furniture that the owner has collected from travels the world over. A special mention must go to the Cabriolet Suite, whose roof retracts above a four-poster bed at the touch of a button, revealing glorious daytime sunshine or an incredible starlit sky, the scent of the vineyards often dancing in the breeze.
The hotel also offers one of the best medical spas in Europe: Espace Chenot. Fusing scientific research and cutting-edge technologies with traditional Chinese medicine, programmes range from refreshing spa weekends to life-changing weeklong detoxes, all designed to supercharge both mental and physical health.
As with all Relais & Châteaux hotels the food is first rate, especially the regional dishes served at Leonefelice Vista Lago, whose terrace offers breathtaking views of Lake Iseo. There’s also a wonderful pizzeria and a restaurant reserved exclusively for guests enjoying spa programmes, serving wholesome dishes designed to cut back on calories without compromising on flavour.
