Herdade da Malhadinha Nova
A sprawling estate that spans over 610 acres, Herdade da Malhadinha Nova embodies the best of the Alentejo: good wine, sweeping views, the freshest farm-to-fork food and warm hospitality.
When the Soares family purchased the abandoned farm in 1998 and set about restoring it, they used traditional techniques to preserve the farm’s history while embracing modern architectural styles that sat sympathetically within the natural environment. The result is a Relais & Châteaux property that delivers on sense of place while being modern and stylish.
Five distinct accommodation units lie scattered around the estate. The first to be built, Monte da Peceguina, offers seven bedrooms and three suites, all with heated terracotta floors, traditional reed and wood ceilings, iPads, Bose sound systems and Philippe Starck lighting. They look one way to the vineyards and the other towards a heated infinity pool. The newer Casa do Ancoradouro sits on the highest part of the estate and offers seven luxurious suites, a vast swimming pool and plenty of outdoor living space. More contemporary are the four spacious suites of Casa das Pedras, each with its own private terrace and plunge pool. While most exclusive of all are the two private villas, one with three suites, the other with two double rooms.
The excellent restaurant draws on the property’s organic garden and the animals reared on the farm and won a Michelin Green Star in 2024. Tours and tastings at the on-site winery are of course a must, with other activities ranging from horse riding and hot-air balloon rides to cooking classes and romantic picnics in the vineyards.
