Eastern & Oriental Hotel, Penang
The E&O, as the hotel is known around the world, sits on the seafront in the heart of historic George Town on the island of Penang. Opened in the late 19th century, the Eastern & Oriental quickly became a fashionable address on the Grand Tour of Asia; today it’s a Penang institution and one of Asia’s most iconic hotels.
The hotel is divided into two wings. The original Heritage Wing has been expertly restored through the years and does a fine job of honouring the style of a bygone era while keeping up with modern standards of comfort, service and facilities. The Victory Annex only opened in the 21st century yet its rooms retain the historic feel of the original hotel, with timber floors and furniture and marble-tiled bathrooms with freestanding baths. Both wings feature a fusion of styles from both Europe and Asia and boast city and sea views.
Dining reflects Penang’s position at the crossroads of several cultures. English afternoon tea has been served at Palm Court since 1885. Cocktails can be enjoyed at sundown over views of Penang’s waterfront at Farquhar’s Bar. Then at dinner you can choose between a buffet-style spread of Malaysian favourites at Sarkies and continental cuisine overlooking the Andaman Sea at Planters Lounge.
Treatments at the spa range from signature facials to Thai, Ayurvedic and Japanese Shiatsu massage, while hotel facilities include a shopping arcade, fitness centre and a fascinating gallery that sheds light on the history of Penang and the hotel.
