Along the Costa Brava from Alicante, SHA Wellness Clinic is a futuristic looking spa and health clinic that fuses Eastern healing and Western medicine in a dramatic hilltop setting overlooking the Mediterranean.

Health and wellbeing are taken seriously here, with all guests given a full medical assessment on arrival. The SHA concept is to treat whatever ails you, be that a low-level wellness issue or a major illness. You meet with a doctor to discuss what you want to get out of your stay, as well as with a nutritionist who’ll put you on one of three diet plans, from a menu that’s essentially a healthier version of resort dining, to a restrictive meal plan of plant-based foods and cleansing miso soups.

With more than 300 health professionals on staff, including 30 doctors, SHA’s programmes cater to everything from osteopathy, reflexology, acupuncture and ozone therapy (where blood is taken, spun through an oxygenating ‘ozone generator’ and fed back into your veins for a rejuvenating blast of energy) to the latest in healthy ageing, genetics, cognitive development, Watsu water treatments and brain stimulation.

What’s especially striking, though, is that even without the health programmes, SHA would rank among the most stylish places to soak up the Spanish sun. The long infinity pool offers sweeping mountain views. Accommodation ranges from deluxe suites with private terraces and open-plan bedrooms and living rooms, to 11 luxury residences with two or three bedrooms, private pools and spectacular views.
