Halkidiki
This three-pronged region in Greece’s north is made up of Kassandra, popular with holidaymakers, Sithonia, known for its hidden coves, mountainous villages, verdant valleys and isolated beaches, and thirdly, Mount Athos, the only monastic state in Europe. As a whole, Halkidiki is rich in sparkling sands, rolling vineyards and a terrain perfect for active pursuits. Go cycling through the interior along winding pine-forest paths and over rugged hillsides, kayak at sunset across still, inviting waters, take a diving excursion for the day, or hop on a boat from Ouranoupoli for a tour around mighty Mount Athos. There are also ample cultural sightseeing opportunities, including archaeological sites and Petralona’s Cave, also known as the Cave of the Red Stones. For those wanting to relax on the sand, there is no end of stylish seaside resorts and blissful beaches, where you can spend days sunbathing, cooling off in the waters, and dining on fresh seafood right on the beachfront.
