Steeped in history and Southern charm, Georgia and South Carolina offer cobblestone streets, grand mansions and sun-drenched beaches. Explore Savannah and Charleston’s storied past, relax on the pristine shores of Hilton Head Island, and discover Atlanta’s vibrant culture and rich heritage.
History runs deep in Georgia and South Carolina. Legend has it that Civil War general W.T. Sherman spared Savannah, Georgia for its beauty, a claim easily believed when strolling through its rich Historic District, home to the best Regency-style house in America, the Owens-Thomas House.
Savannah’s squares dazzle in spring as azaleas, dogwoods and magnolias bloom. Even in the August heat, its charm is relentless, with lush greenery draping cast-iron balconies and restaurants serving classic Lowcountry fare such as shrimp and grits, fried green tomatoes and roasted oysters.
Across the border, Charleston enchants with cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages and colourful historic homes. With 73% of its pre-revolutionary buildings intact, it’s America’s best-preserved colonial city. Nearby, grand antebellum mansions and Fort Sumter’s Civil War history add to its appeal.
Between these cities, pristine beaches and island escapes beckon. Tybee Island boasts Georgia’s tallest lighthouse, Hilton Head Island and Kiawah Island offer luxury resorts, and Folly Beach teems with oceanfront attractions. Inland, Atlanta has a lot to offer too, from the World of Coca-Cola to a string of sites honouring Martin Luther King Jr.
