Boutique Sri Lanka

Hanging like a teardrop off India, Sri Lanka was championed by Marco Polo as the finest island of its size in all the world. Seven centuries on and we see no reason to contradict him. Few countries offer so much to see in such a compact space, from breathtaking beaches and timeless temple ruins to wonderful wildlife, emerald tea plantations, jungle-clad peaks and flavourful food. This tailor-made tour covers many of the highlights in a comfortably paced fortnight, all the while staying in some of Sri Lanka’s most luxurious boutique hotels.

    London to Colombo

Your chauffeur-guide will meet you at the airport and drive you to The Wallawwa, a colonial manor house turned boutique hotel set in manicured gardens just 15 minutes from the airport. A far cry from your standard airport hotel, The Wallawwa is the ideal place to recharge after your flight, complete with excellent restaurant, hidden-away pool and contemporary guest rooms.

  • Days 2-3

    Negombo to Anuradhapura

Today you’ll head up country to the cultural heartland of Sri Lanka and check in for three nights at Uga Ulagalla, a group of 25 luxurious and eco-friendly villas set in 58 acres of manicured gardens and lush reclaimed paddy fields. The resort sits towards the north of the island’s famous ‘Cultural Triangle’, which stretches between the ancient former capitals of Anuradhapura to the north, Polonnaruwa to the east and Kandy to the south.

Within the boundaries of the triangle lies perhaps Sri Lanka’s most extraordinary sight, the 5th century rock fortress of Sigiriya, which you’ll visit with our guide on day three. Rising 200 metres straight up from the surrounding plains, the UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts ancient frescoes, beautiful walled gardens and – at the top of its 1,200 steps – magnificent views from the ruins of a once-royal palace.

  • Day 4

    Anuradhapura

Today is spent with your guide exploring the ancient, ruined city of Anuradhapura, the capital of Sri Lanka for more than 1,300 years and one of medieval Asia’s greatest ever cities. The sprawling complex contains a rich collection of archaeological and architectural wonders, including enormous dagobas (relic chambers) beaten only in size by the Egyptian pyramids, soaring brick towers, ancient pools, handsome stone carvings and crumbling temples. It’s also home to the ‘sacred bodhi tree’ or Sri Maha Bodhi. Said to be a cutting from the tree under which the Buddha gained enlightenment, this major pilgrimage site is the oldest historically documented tree on earth, dating back over 2,000 years.
