Post Ranch Inn
Perched on the cliffs of Big Sur, 1,200 feet above the Pacific and encircled by mountains and towering redwoods, this boutique bolthole commands possibly the most dramatic location of any hotel on the California coast. Each of its 40 guestrooms is an architectural marvel offering jaw-dropping ocean or mountain views. Cliff Houses offer outdoor decks suspended above the ocean; Ocean Houses blend into the hillside with grasses and wildflowers covering their roofs; Tree Houses are built on stilts nine feet from the forest floor; one building is even shaped like a butterfly with rooms beneath its wings. The views continue at the clifftop restaurant Sierra Mar, a favourite with locals and as renowned for its wine list as for its locally sourced menus.
